I have lost -93lbs on Mounjaro / Zepbound (due to shortage) and have been on Mounjaro / Zepbound for almost 21 months (so far!).
When starting any new medication including a GLP-1, it’s essential to understand how it works and the possible effects it may have on your body. Mounjaro is a prescription drug used to manage blood sugar levels and help with weight management, but like any medication, it comes with potential side effects, including body aches.
Mounjaro is an injectable medication developed by Eli Lilly, designed to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels and lose weight. The active ingredient tirzepatide works by stimulating the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, helping control food intake and insulin sensitivity. This helps reduce body weight and improve diabetes treatment outcomes.
Mounjaro is often given as an injection under the skin, and its benefits extend beyond just controlling high blood sugar; it also aids in weight loss, making it popular among those looking for a comprehensive weight loss journey.
As I inject Mounjaro in three Mounjaro site locations:
- Stomach by belly button
- Thigh
- Back of Arm
My Mounjaro side effects have changed. Just because I didn’t get a Mounjaro side effect for one site location or one dose, does not mean I won’t get in the future.

And also as I increase in Mounjaro doses:
- Mounjaro 2.5mg (Starting dose and lowest dose)
- Mounjaro 5 mg
- Mounjaro 7.5mg
- Mounjaro 10mg
- Mounjaro 12.5mg
- Mounjaro 15mg (Highest dose)

This does not mean I won’t get Mounjaro side effects with that particular dose as I titrate up.

Can Mounjaro Cause Body Aches?
For me, Mounjaro ABSOLUTELY has caused times of having body aches.
I do not have body aches all the time from taking Mounjaro.
Going back to titrating up doses and also varying site locations, I do get Mounjaro side effects.
When I titrate up to a higher dose, I know body aches and tiredness come for me.
The body aches feel like I have the mild flu or my muscles are just sore.
Currently, when I inject into my arm, I also get body aches and tiredness.

Does this mean everyone will get body aches? NO.
Everyone’s body is different and will have different reactions, different side effects…or NONE at all!
If the body aches become severe, it’s crucial to seek medical help and consult a healthcare provider. They can assess whether the aches are a sign of something more serious, such as inflammation of the pancreas, also known as pancreatitis, or another adverse reaction.

Mounjaro And Body Aches
SOLUTIONS: Gratefully, there are solutions for Mounjaro and body aches.
Here are 3 Body Ache Solutions that have worked well for me:

✅Hands down the best solution for me to prevent body aches. I notice when I don’t take my electrolytes on shot day and the day after, I feel worse.
LMNT Electrolytes has magnesium, potassium and sodium, which help with body aches specifically.
❌I stopped taking Liquid IV because they add sugar. LMNT Electrolytes does not add sugar.
❌I also stopped taking Gatorade because of the dyes. LMNT Electrolytes does not have dyes or junk added.

Dehydration can exacerbate body aches and make you feel worse overall. Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins can help support your body as it adjusts to the medication.
2 – Epsom Salts
✅Taking a warm bath with Epsom Salts on Mounjaro shot day and the day after has been so helpful for the body aches.
I simply use 1/2 cup to 1 cup of Epsom Salts for a 10-25 minute soak. And that usually helps to make my body feel better.

3 – Recognizing Rest
Maybe you can relate? I’m a high functioning, high output in productivity person.
Recognizing rest on my Mounjaro journey has been so important. I allow my body the gift of rest and recognizing when it hurts. Slowing down has been a valuable lesson for me.

4- Regular Exercise
Light physical activity can help alleviate body aches by improving blood flow and reducing stiffness. However, always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you’re experiencing side effects.
Mounjaro Side Effects:
Here are the most common Mounjaro side effects from Mounjaro.com. Of course everyone can experience different side effects.
Personally, just because I had one Mounjaro side effect at one dose didn’t mean I was going to have it for all doses.
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Decreased appetite
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Indigestion
- Stomach Pain
Always talk with your doctor.
And the inverse for me is true too. Just because I didn’t experience one side effect on one dose didn’t mean I didn’t have that side effect at a higher dose when I titrated up.
Severe Mounjaro Side Effects
Injection Site Reactions:
When you take an injectable medication like Mounjaro, one of the most common mounjaro side effects is injection site reactions. These can include redness, swelling, or itching where the injection is given. These reactions are generally mild and go away after a short time.
However, if you notice any significant swelling or severe pain, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider. In rare cases, these reactions could be part of an allergic reaction that requires immediate attention.
Severe Abdominal Pain:
Another potential side effect is severe abdominal pain. This can be a sign of gallbladder problems or kidney problems and should not be ignored. Severe pain in the abdomen, especially if accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or yellowing of the skin, may be a sign of a more severe condition such as pancreatitis, and you should seek immediate medical attention.
Kidney Function and Kidney Problems:
Some people taking Mounjaro have reported issues with their kidney function, including kidney damage or acute kidney injury. This is more likely to occur in individuals who are already at risk due to existing medical conditions such as diabetes or hypertension.
Side Effects Of Mounjaro
Your healthcare provider will monitor your kidney function throughout your treatment, especially if you already have a history of kidney problems. If you notice swelling in your legs, decreased urination, or severe pain in your lower back, seek medical help right away.
Vision Changes and Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes, and some people taking Mounjaro have reported vision changes. While this side effect is not as common as others, it is essential to be aware of it. If you experience blurred vision, floaters, or difficulty seeing, consult a healthcare professional immediately, as these could be signs of diabetic retinopathy or other eye conditions.
Risk of Thyroid Cancer
Mounjaro carries a boxed warning from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the risk of thyroid cancer, particularly a rare type called medullary thyroid carcinoma. This warning is based on findings from animal studies. Though the risk is considered low for humans, anyone with a family history of thyroid cancer or a condition known as endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 should discuss this risk with their doctor before starting the medication.
Allergic Reactions
While rare, allergic reactions to Mounjaro can occur. Signs of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and hives. If you experience these symptoms, it is a medical emergency, and you should seek immediate care.
How Mounjaro Works
To understand why side effects like body aches happen, it’s important to know how Mounjaro works in the body. Mounjaro is part of the glp-1 receptor agonists class of medications. These drugs work by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which the body naturally produces to help regulate blood sugar levels and control food intake.
By acting on this hormone, Mounjaro not only helps lower high blood sugar, but it also reduces body weight by suppressing appetite. The medication slows the emptying of the stomach, leading to a feeling of fullness and decreased calorie intake, which supports weight loss.
