Zepbound is the new weight loss drug that has FDA approval for chronic weight management and is a GLP-1 receptor agonists.
Mounjaro is FDA approval for type 2 diabetes. Mounjaro been prescribed off-label for weight loss and chronic obesity management.
Difference Between Zepbound And Mounjaro
The biggest difference between Zepbound and Mounjaro is the FDA approval. Because of the approval of Zepbound, this can change insurance approval coverage for patients.
Insurance companies hurdles is the biggest difference for both injectable medications. You may need a prior authorization from your insurance company health plans before getting weight loss medications or obesity treatment.

As more treatment of obesity drugs come out, hopefully medication will have greater access to Eli Lilly’s drug. Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy and Ozempic work similarly to Mounjaro and Zepbound. The active ingredient semaglutide is in Ozempic and Wegovy.

Zepbound vs Mounjaro
Both Zepbound and Mounjaro made by the same manufacturer, Eli Lillly, and active ingredient is drug tirzepatide.
There are 3 Mounjaro injection sites and 3 Zepbound injection sites in the same places:
- Stomach by belly button
- Upper thigh
- Back of your upper arm
Proper Injection Technique Is The Same: Remove the injection pen from the carton for your dose of Zebpound or dose of Mounjaro. Take off the gray base cap. Twist the unlocking system.

When injecting, push the purple injection button and you will hear the first click. Hold the gray plunger for up to 10 seconds and you will hear a second click. You can remove the pen from your skin.
Zepbound injections and Mounjaro are both subcutaneous injections.
You may see left over medication from the single-dose pen. You skin may or may not have blood. This is all normal for your weekly injections.

Recommended starting dosage of Zepbound is Zepbound 2.5mg and starting dosage of Mounjaro is Mounjaro 2.5mg.

Here are the most common Zepbound side effects. Of course everyone can experience different side effects.
Personally, just because I had one Mounjaro / Zepbound side effect at one dose didn’t mean I was going to have it for all doses.

Always talk with your doctor if you are having a common side effect, symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, abdominal pain or if your family has a history or thyroid cancer.
