Having quick weight loss in a short period of time = potential hair loss.

**To note, hair loss is from any weight loss in a short period whether it’s bariatric surgery, Mounjaro, Wegovy or other weight loss methods.

Hair loss can occur up to 3 months after a stressful event (Source: Medical New). The hair loss you are seeing now is usually a result of what happened earlier.

How To Stop GLP-1 Hair Loss

It takes 3 months for hair drama to show up (where we see…gah! Think in shower with clumps coming out). And 3 months to see changes (meaning getting hair back) to show up.

= 6 MONTHS TO SEE HAIR CHANGES!

Eeek! This timeline freaked me out!

If you are like me, I love my hair and was scared seeing clumps literally washing down the drain. Thank goodness I have solutions from my -106lb Mounjaro weight loss journey I can share that helped me.

One of the potential side effects of taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist is hair loss.

I’m not a doctor, nor pretend to play one on the internet. This is simply what I have learned on my -103lb GLP-1 weight loss journey and what I use. Always talk with your health care providers for medical advice. Here is what I use:

Brand name Mounjaro and Zepbound are a tirzepatide from manufacturer Eli Lilly. Wegovy and Ozempic are a semaglutide from manufacturer Novo Norodisk.

Mounjaro and Ozempic have Food and Drug Administration approval for type 2 diabetes drugs, but is off labeled prescribed for weight-loss drugs. FDA approval for Mounjaro for prescription drug for chronic weight management is Zepbound. FDA approval for Ozempic for prescription drug for chronic weight management is Wegovy.

3 – Eat Protein

Make sure your protein intake is where it needs to be to prevent risk of hair loss.

Working with a GLP-1 Dietician to tweak my foods to eat while taking Mounjaro has been very helpful for me to have a healthy diet & not restrictive diets. If you are taking weight loss drugs, I encourage you to talk with the dietician I use.

Lifestyle changes are important with Mounjaro.

Making sure I have enough protein on days I’m able to eat is an important for focus for me in addition to caloric intake.

If you are having nutrient deficiencies as a result of these drugs like Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic or similar, talk with the GLP-1 Dietician to come up with an effective treatment plan and weight management treatment (if necessary).

In addition to helping with my hair loss, protein has also kept me fuller-longer.

Reminder that it does take 3 months to see effects from trauma or healing. Trauma can mean weight loss to clarify.

And seeing healing and results from supplements, collagen and protein can take 3 months to fully see in hair.

I do see in my skin changes much sooner than in my hair and my skin is a good indicator.

Most Common Side Effects

The most common Mounjaro side effects are:

• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Decreased appetite
• Vomiting
• Constipation
• Indigestion
• Stomach Pain

You’ll notice it is a lot of gastrointestinal side effects….either it can come out or stay in.

Personally, just because I had one Mounjaro milder side effects at one dose didn’t mean I was going to have it for all doses.

And the inverse for me is true too. Just because I didn’t experience one side effect on one dose didn’t mean I didn’t have that side effect at a higher dose when I titrated up.

If you are on diabetes medications, continue to monitor your blood sugar levels and discuss with healthcare professional about medical conditions. Side effect of Ozempic and Wegovy can be similar to Mounjaro.

Serious Side Effects

Always seek medical help from your healthcare provider if you are having severe pain, severe stomach pain, severe abdominal pain and severe symptoms mentioned above. Those can be serious side effects and may need medical attention quickly from your health care professional. A rare side effect is thyroid cancer. You are at are at a higher risk for a genetic type of thyroid cancer if you have a familial history. Talk to your healthcare provider about symptoms of thyroid cancer.

When to Seek Medical Attention & Medical Care:

While mild to moderate body aches are a known side effect of semaglutide, it’s essential to be vigilant and consult with your healthcare provider if:

• The body aches are severe, persistent, or worsening.
• You experience other concerning symptoms alongside body aches.
• The body aches are interfering with your daily life or preventing you from engaging in regular activities.
